Church of the Transfiguration

50 West Bloomfield Rd. Pittsford, NY 14534

"Lord, how good it is for us to be here' from Matthew 17 is the motto of the Church of the Transfiguration.  All are welcome here.

In 1983, the Diocese of Rochester determined the rapid growth in south Pittsford warranted the formation of a new parish.  Rev. Gerald Appelby was announced as the pastor in May, 1983.  There was one huge problem, there was no meeting space for the new parish.

An empty barn at the corner of Stone Rd and Clover St. was cleaned out for the first Mass of the new parish, which occurred on the Feast of the Transfiguration, August 6, 1983.   While this was tolerable for summer and early fall Masses, the cold weather forced a move to other temporary locations, Jo-Mor movie theater and Christ Clarion church.  But the parish returned to the barn for Christmas Mass, complete with farm animals around a manger.

The land at 50 West Bloomfield was purchased, and in 1984 the parish moved to the building now called the Education Center. The official dedication occurred in 1985.

We soon outgrew that building, and in 1992 our current church was dedicated. Parishioners had two requests in reference to the interior of the church…that it was “bright” and that the congregation would be “close to the presider”. This was accomplished with all the beautiful windows, an altar raised only one small step, and slanted floor and seating locating the congregation no further than 45' from the presider.  In our altar table reside the ashes of St. Lawrence, in reverence to Rochester Diocese Bishop Larry Casey, and a relic from Sr. Maria Goretti, to represent the role of women in the church and the place of women on the altar.  Our campus was completed in 1999 with the construction of the Parish Life Center, including a gym, kitchen and meeting rooms.

Fr. Jerry was succeeded by Fr. Michael J. Bausch, our retired pastor.  Fr. Robert S. Bourcy is our current pastor.

Children are a blessing to us, and we welcome them warmly.  We know their presence means a bit of chatter and crying, it's joyful noise unto the Lord.  But we do have a chapel with windows into the main sanctuary, a nursery with a changing table and rocking chair,  and changing tables in the rest rooms for your use.  Our Gathering Area is frequented by toddlers who need to stretch their legs during Mass.  For the slightly older, we have Children's Liturgy of the Word during Sunday Mass.

  • Is there easy access for individuals with disabilities?

Our church and its facilities are wheelchair and walker accessible.  We have a hearing loop for indiividuals wearing hearing aids, and a couple of headsets as well.  Communion can be brought back to anyone who cannot receive at the front of the church.
